=============if you're too lazy to click the link or watch the
video====================
The *USC Viterbi School of Engineering* and the *National Academy of
Engineering* (NAE), in partnership with *Lee Zlotoff, the creator of the TV
series MacGyver*, and the *White House Office of Science and Technology*,
recently launched a global TV idea competition entitled "The Next MacGyver."
*In short, we're looking for new TV show ideas (narrative - drama, comedy,
sci-fi, thriller, etc.) with a female engineer as protagonist. *
This is all part of a national initiative to excite more young people to
science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, as President
Obama outlined
in his speech a couple years ago.
<http://news.yahoo.com/obama-announces-push-train-10k-engineers-yearly-180015366.html>
*Five winners will receive $5K each and be given the chance to develop a
killer pilot screenplay with a successful Hollywood TV producer, including:*
- Roberto Orci, writer/producer (*Star Trek*, *Scorpion*, *Sleepy Hollow*
, *Hawaii Five-O*, *Fringe*)
- Anthony Zuiker, creator and executive producer, *CSI* franchise
(including the soon-to-be launched *CSI:Cyber)*
- Lori McCreary, CEO and founder, Revelations Entertainment; president,
Producer’s Guild of America (*Madam Secretary*, *Through the Wormhole
with Morgan Freeman*)
- *Clayton Krueger, senior vice president of television, Scott Free
Productions (3001: The Final Odyssey)*
The barrier to entry is not high (basic one pager submissions), but
deadline is approaching (May 1).
*Top 12 finalists will have original concept art created around their
ideas, pitch directly to judges at capstone event at Paley Center for Media
in Beverly Hills. *
***UPDATE: Entries due by Friday, May 1, 2015***
Doctors had "ER." Lawyers had "Law & Order." Now, it's time for some heroic
engineers.
*Submit your idea for the first great TV show with an iconic female
engineer main character.*

*We're not looking to re-make MacGyver*. We're looking for that next show
in the spirit of MacGyver, with a female protagonist who uses engineering
to solve problems.
*What's your story?* Is it a female engineer who builds the first starship
to Alpha Centauri? A mechanical engineer that uses tech to become an Iron
Man-like superhero? A computer scientist that uses Big Data to
revolutionize the NBA? A powerful engineer-CEO behind the first
trillion-dollar company in history?
We're looking for ideas only at this stage. No completed scripts necessary.
All genres (drama, sci-fi, comedy, action, thriller, etc.) are welcome.
*Five winners receive $5,000 each and be given the rare opportunity to be
paired with top Hollywood mentors
<http://listserv.viterbi.usc.edu/t/54319/2577799/6289/9/>*, who will help
them develop the female character and an engaging pilot script. The goal is
to develop viable concept packages for pitching to a network or
distributor, and create a historic TV series that inspires young women to
consider pursuing engineering.
*Who can submit*: Anyone worldwide over 18. Screenwriters, engineers,
students, non-students and essentially anyone who has a good idea and cares
deeply about exciting young people to STEM fields.
