Hi all,

Related to the ongoing discussion about how to identify open source hardware projects.

Marino (see emails below) is developing a cellphone app to allow people to scan and tag "openables" and would be interested in hearing ideas for the best ways to do this. See marketply.org

Feel free to forward this conversation to the email list. I'd love to join a discussion of strategies on how best to tag and list open hardware goods!

Openables are one of the pillars Marketply promotes on the app. For example, when your app locate a product such as computer hardware, Markeptly will display an open-hardware alternative next to it. More choice!

Another strategy is "desired advertising", instead of displaying unwanted ads, we only run ads for companies or goods approved by the community. This fits our mission to help people reshape the market (and to advance openables, adaptables, and sutainables).

The mobile app is now in wireframe mode (we're testing the design UX with paper mockups). We'll submit a barebones version to Mozilla's WebFWD program. At the moment we're focusing on crowdfunding, applying to the Shuttleworth Foundation, and connecting with people.

Openables is an umbrella term for goods that anyone can freely explore, redesign, and share. (Basically: anything open source, open hardware, open content, Creative Commons licensed, etc)

The community identifies and tags goods in the market as "openable" so your Marketply app helps you to locate such goods. The app will help people anywhere to openly coordinate with makerspaces and entrepreneurs who design and supply goods.

Our goal is universal access to openables, by helping you locate and request them. (also sustainables and adaptables).

Best,

Marino

(p.s. The Marketply app is open source)
