Oxygen is actually a petty harmful gas  to life. If we didn't use  it  for energy  production it would  be  a bad  thing.  The  oxygen drain might be an oxygen defense mechanism, chemically binding  it into something like CO2 or similar gas. We can't breath, they take  a breath  of  something  they find  useful. Like nitrogen or  something. And they use less of  it, so bam, vacuum  resistance.
