[Discuss] Free Hardware

I kind of agree with Matt on this :
"We don't need a bold line dividing "free" from "not free." We need a North
Star defining "perfect freedom" and a willingness to always ask ourselves
if we could get a little closer to it. We also need a cultural norm of
accepting that different people can strive for the ideal, a little or a
lot, using different strategies, and be praised for how close they got
without being condemned for how far away they still are."

The North Star is what the community should strive for. The way to do that
is to identify open source projects that are most closest to the North Star
and make them successful (Maybe it is a good idea to define what it
success, is it money or impact or something else). Then other
projects(which want similar successes) will want to move closer to the
North Star. As a community help identify and remove the friction of moving
towards the North Star. Its probably the success of Linux that drove tons
of open source software. Makerbot was poster child for a while, but they
decided to move away from the North Star. Maybe because the kind of success
that they wanted was different. Maybe because moving to the North Star was
difficult (eg - Contribution workflow for open source hardware projects is
still a huge pain ).
