Well, Oracle ate Sun and it appears as though there haven't been any
updates for some time, with the odd dead link on the website. Take
from that what you will. In addition to which I'm not sure there is
much of an OpenSPARC community — I can't remember if there are
derivatives, it's a while since I looked. Then you also need a fairly
expensive FPGA dev system to play with it.

With lowRISC I'd fully expect there to be a very active community and
updates, and to be able to target at least some minimal SoC to low
cost FPGA dev boards.
