[Discuss] Current status of USB VID/PID for open source hardware?

I did see Ian's talk at the 2012 summit. Unfortunately the problem has only
gotten worse since then - especially with the cost increase from $2000 to
$5000.

David - Brian Benchoff ended up pulling my research into his article on
hackaday here:
http://hackaday.com/2013/10/22/usb-implementers-forum-says-no-to-open-source/
The main takeaway from what I found is that the USB-IF is managed by the
VTM group (http://www.vtmgroup.com/) a company that manages not for profit
organizations. This is no secret, the VTM group name and logo are listed on
the usb.org pages. It goes against the interest of VTM to help with OSHWA's
goals. I believe The best route of contact would most likely be through the
USB-IF board of directors on http://www.usb.org/about/ or through open
source contacts we already have within the BOD parent companies (Intel, HP,
etc).
That's just my 2 cents.

Thanks,
Adam Fabio
