We've been doing the same with our designs now, starting to include SketchUp! models for our newer boards.  We use EagleUp! to do that (like a lot of the Sparkfun users).  The only difficult part is designing the components that you don't have, everything else is automated.  We've put our sketchup component models into the public domain here, if you're looking for a few extras: https://github.com/DynamicPerception/EagleUpModels/

It is immensely helpful, and makes work with our enclosure manufacturer easier now (we 'rough up' designs and send them to them for inspiration along with the DXF and an actual board).
